Joyful People

Where have all the people gone

who laugh and joke

and carry on?

Who look for reasons

to smile

not frown?

Who lift others

up, not tear

them down?

I looked around

but could not

find them.

I decided that I

would do it alone,

then.

I laughed and joked

and carried on,

at first I was

the only one.

But one by one

I looked around

and people’s smiles

were being found.

People seemed happier-

with themselves

and each other.

All this time

they’d been

undercover–

waiting for me

to give the green light

and call the joy

forth from others

by allowing my own

to shine bright.
