The Street Beside Mine

I took a walk today

on the street beside mine.

My feet were out of rhythm,

my heart out of line.

My mind was restless,

I just needed some space,

to step away

from the whole human race.

The humidity was fearsome,

my skin instantly damp;

my knees were a little sore,

and my butt had a cramp.

I cranked up my music

and started to walk,

staring at my feet

so I didn’t have to talk.

Slowly but surely,

I began to feel better.

I noticed the clouds, the trees

and the weather.

I began to feel grateful

for this moment in time,

and then I began

to craft this rhyme.

One by one, word by word,

the pairs of lines arranged.

But just as I get to the end I find

the entire beginning has changed:

I took a walk today

on the street beside mine,

where my feet found their rhythm

and my heart found its rhyme.

My mind is at peace,

because Nature held space,

now I’m ready to rejoin

the human race.
